What Is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative Medicine

Our ability to understand and harness the remarkable healing powers of the human body has revolutionized the way we treat many injuries and conditions, including injuries to bones, muscles, and ligaments. These treatments, collectively known as regenerative medicine, utilize and enhance the body’s natural healing functions to reduce pain and inflammation and accelerate the recovery process. Minimally invasive regenerative therapies can spare patients the challenges, inconvenience, and potential complications involved in surgery.

What Orthopedic Injuries Can Regenerative Medicine Help With?

Regenerative treatments are safe, tested, and effective. At OrthoMiami, we use regenerative medicine to treat a range of injuries and conditions, including:

  • Tendonitis
  • Ligament sprains
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • ACL injuries
  • Bursitis
  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle injuries
  • Ankle sprains and fractures
  • Chronic heel pain

There are several types of regenerative treatments that can effectively treat patients with orthopedic issues. The most commonly utilized are platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and stem cell therapy.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

When we suffer an injury to soft tissue like a tendon, our body’s initial response is to quickly send platelet cells to the affected tissue. That’s because platelets are not only the clotting cells of our blood, but they also contain powerful healing factors that get to work repairing injured tissue and providing assistance to stem cells in damaged muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

PRP therapy involves taking that natural process and supercharging it. The treatment is safe, simple, fast, and largely pain-free. We start by taking a sample of the patient’s blood and placing it in a centrifuge where we separate the platelets and their healing and growth factors from the other elements of the blood. Dr. Ceballos injects those growth factors right into injured or damaged tissue where these specialized cells jumpstart repair and healing, dividing and building new tissue.

Since PRP therapy uses your own blood rather than blood from a donor, there is no risk of transmissible infection. The non-surgical treatment typically takes only a few hours, including preparation, injection, and recovery. No anesthesia is needed, nor is any significant recovery time involved.

Stem Cell Therapy

The all-purpose handymen of our bodies, stem cells contain powerful anti-inflammatory elements that help restore healthy function and fix damaged tissue throughout the body. While anti-inflammatory drugs like cortisone only provide temporary pain relief, stem cells relieve pain while simultaneously restoring damaged tissue, resulting in long-term pain reduction.

In amniotic stem cell therapy, the doctors use amniotic tissue from elective donations. Donors must undergo a rigorous screening process approved by the Food and Drug Administration and the American Association of Tissue Banks before their stem cells can be used in therapeutic treatments.

These approved and pre-screened stem cells are then transformed into injections. The doctor injects the stem cells into the injured tissue, stimulating the work that the body is already doing.
