Sclerotherapy and Other Vein Treatments

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment offered by orthopedic specialists in Miami to address varicose veins and spider veins. An estimated 30-60 percent of American adults suffer from spider veins, varicose veins, or both conditions. But all of that company means very little when you’re the one embarrassed to wear shorts, swimsuits, or skirts because of this unattractive and frustrating phenomenon. What should make you feel better is the fact that there are safe and effective treatments available that can make those unsightly spider and varicose veins disappear.

Sometimes, vein treatment might be as simple as wearing compression socks regularly to help redirect blood flow. But in many cases, the treatment that can deliver optimal results is sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy?

Time-tested, perennially popular, and highly effective, sclerotherapy is the go-to varicose and spider vein treatment for millions of people every year. Sclerotherapy involves treating unsightly leg veins by injecting a sclerosant solution into the damaged veins. This solution eventually causes the veins to collapse and become absorbed into the bloodstream. We perform this safe and proven procedure in our offices, and the treatment usually takes less than an hour.

What Is The Procedure Like?

We do not need to use anesthesia for sclerotherapy, as patients may only experience a mild burning sensation. After we clean the skin with an antiseptic solution, we inject the sclerosant into the affected veins with a very fine needle. How many injections we make per session varies based on the number, length, and degree of damage to the veins. After the sclerotherapy procedure, we’ll apply cotton balls and compression tape to the injection site(s).

After a sclerotherapy session, most patients can immediately return to work and other day-to-day activities. However, patients should avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for about seven to ten days after their procedure. Some patients may need to wear compression bandages for a few days after the treatment, and some may experience mild bruising and pigmentation that usually subsides within a few days.

The results of sclerotherapy are usually evident after three to six weeks, and almost all of our patients are extremely satisfied with the results. To preserve sclerotherapy’s positive, visible results, patients should maintain an active, healthy life after the procedure.
